Unlock and Jailbreak iPad

If you have landed on this page then you are looking for information on How To Jailbreak iPad. Like the iPhone the iPad also comes with a locked down file system which means that again Apple is in full control of what you can or cannot do with your device. My goal and the goal of my team is to jailbreak the iPad which means unlocking iPad’s file system so that you can use your iPad anyway you want. This includes using all different apps, making system tweaks, fixes and more. It also allows developers to make their own apps too. Since the iPad uses the same operating system (OS) as the iPhone it means that jailbreaking the iPad is even easier than anticipated. The hard work has already been completed and now it is just a matter of tweaking and adjusting things so that the iPad becomes unlock able too.

iPad Jailbreak Solutions Spirit and Blackra1n

So we already know that two different programs have been released for unlocking the iPad and these are Spirit Jailbreak and Blackra1n Jailbreak.

What’s Spirit Jailbreak?

  • Jailbreak with Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for the Ipad and it works on the latest firmwares too. This program can also be used to jailbreak the iPhone and iPod touch also.
  • Spirit is not a carrier unlock and therefore you will not be able to use it to unlock your iPad to any network.
  • If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to carry out a full restore in order to use Spirit.
  • Do not upgrade your firmware.

Requirements

  • In order to use Spirit you need an iPad that is using firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.2 or more. (this is constantly being upgraded as Apple release new firmware editions.)
  • Your iPad needs to be activated. This means it must not be stuck on the Connect to iTunes or emergency call screen.
  • Any version of iTunes 9 that has also been synched with your iPad.

When you use the official Spirit download you will be able to run whatever iPhone/iPad programs you want even if it’s not in the Apple Apps Store which is great news. This new jailbreak also supports the iPad but you should be aware that it is still in Beta stage so you need to take precautions when using it.

What’s iPad BlackRa1n Jailbreak?

  • BlackRa1n is the other jailbreaking solution that you can use for the iPad.
  • BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak so you need to make sure that you don’t let your battery run down.
  • BlackRa1n allows you to fully unlock your device means that you can use any carrier you choose.
  • You can store as many unapproved apps as you like.

Requirements

  • In order to use BlackRa1n you need an iPad with the 3.1.2 firmware. This is constantly been looked at as new firmware editions are released.
  • Your iPad must also be activated and synched to iTunes

BlackRa1n is a software tool that will allow you to jailbreak your iPad or iPhone. This is a 30 jailbreak but it is tethered so in order to rebook you have to rerun BlackRa1n.

Differences Between Spirit and BlackRa1n

Spirit and BlackRa1in are really very similar when it comes to jailbreaking the iPad or iPhone. The only difference between the two is the graphics. Spirit installs Cydia automatically while blackRa1n makes you download it through the blackra1n app.

What we know so far about iPad jailbreak progress

  • iPad has already been jailbroken.
  • Spirit and Blackra1n are the two programs that can be used to jailbreak the iPad. Spirit is an untethered program whilst BlackRa1n is tethered.
  • Any bugs and errors are continuously being worked on for both these programs.
  • The iPad uses the same operating system as the iPhone so this makes it easier to jailbreak and unlock because the iPhone has already been successfully unlocked.

Our Goals

Our goals are to unlock any restrictions that Apple have placed on the iPad so that you can use it to its full potential. We want you to be able to do anything you want and not be forced to use Apple’s services or iTunes. Here’s what we want to do:

  • Bypass any activation requirements that come with this device
  • Unlock the iPad so that you can use it with any carrier. This won’t be a problem with the WiFi version as this is already unlocked as is the 3G version.
  • Jailbreak the file system so that you can have full access to everything
  • Allow you to make you own apps

My Critical iPad Review

I’ve had my iPad for a couple of weeks now and overall I am really impressed with what this can do and the improvements that have been made compared to the iPhone. This really is a great device and once you jailbreak it you will really see what the iPad can do. For this review however I am going to focus on the actually hardware and software that come with the iPad.

Hardware

Apple’s is a good make and their hardware is usually very good too. In visual terms this is a beauty and it looks really good. The bad news is that the iPad won’t actually compete with a real netbook hardware wise. This design uses a single core 1GHZ A4 chip to power the iPad which is actually quite weak in terms of computing power. The 16GB, 32GB or 64GB flash drive that you can get is not even big enough to store 6 HD movies which even a low priced netbook will be able to do. The iPad comes with a large 9.7 inch LED backlit screen which is great for viewing web pages, pictures, reading e-books and watching movies or TV shows. The iPad is only half an inch thick and it weighs just 1.5lbs. Now 1.5lbs may seem very little but your arm does tire after about 30 minutes of holding it so be forewarned. The iPad comes with the same great multi touch screen that you get with the iPhone and iPod touch. The iPad also has WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G connectivity. It has a virtual full size keyboard for typing emails and documents. The 1GHZ processes has a built in graphics accelerator that will support up to 720 HD resolution movies at 1024×768 viewing. The iPad also has accelerometer and ambient light sensors which should make it great for gaming. The iPad has a battery life of 10 hours per charge. The iPad can also support all the available apps that there are on the iTune App Store and you can use all the games and software that you have purchased for your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can also transfer your purchasedapps and games to the iPad at no extra cost. This new Apple device also has USB posts so you can add more storage space to the iPad also. You can also use the USB port to charge your iPad. The iPad supports both MacOS and Windows and you can still synchronize documents and files using iTunes.

Software

Below you will find information on the main software that comes with the iPad.

  • Calendar: This is very good and much better than the iPhone Calendar.
  • Contacts: The contacts feature displays a list of contacts and detailed information that you have included about them. Unfortunately this does not integrate with Twitter or Facebook.
  • Notes: This feature is almost the same as the notes feature that comes with the iPhone.
  • Maps: This features is much better that its iPhone counterpart and the maps are much bigger too.
  • iTunes Music and App Store: This is very good and very similar to the store that you will find on iTunes on your pc making it very easy to navigate.
  • Settings: All the root elements are static in a left pane and this makes them very easy to navigate and see the options. This works perfectly.
  • Email: This is similar to that of the iPhone buy you now have it in the left pane where you have all your folders and the reading pane at the right. This really makes it so much easier and faster to go through your emails.
  • Safari: Exactly like the iPhone and again it doesn’t support flash.
  • YouTube: This app is so much better than the iPhone. It is even better than the youtube.com website and if you are a fan of Youtube then this is a really good reason to go ahead and buy the iPad.
  • Photos: This is again similar to the iPhone but there are some nice improvements to it. This makes the iPad a really great device for viewing photos and it also comes with a timeline so you can skip through your pictures with ease.
  • iPod: This app is much better than that of the iPhone. It is now very similar to iTunes on your computer and you can also create and edit playlists which is great.
  • iBooks: This app is not included in your iPad when you buy it but you can download it for free in the apps store. Be warned it doesn’t support PDF or ePub.

The iPad App store has plenty of great apps that you can add to your iPad but there aren’t that many free choices so be prepared to pay for them. Initially these apps were priced quite high but they have come down in price since the launch. Because of Apple’s strict rules the apps that are available in the apps store are pretty limited and this is probably one of the best reasons every to jailbreak and unlock your iPad. Once you do this you will be able to use any apps you want and really use your iPad to its full capability.

Where iPad Fails / What I Really Love About iPad

If you have read this page so far you are probably still wondering whether or not you should spend $500 or more on this device. Hopefully the remainder of this review will help you to answer this question. I am going to be brutally honest here and tell you exactly what the iPad does or doesn’t do and how good I really think it is. I am going to cover a lot in this section but I will break it up so that you can browse through if needs be.

Design

In my option the iPad looks great and looks expensive too. There is an audio jack connector for your headphones and a microphone for apps that require it. The speaker is located at the bottom of the device where the Home button is. The audio volume is something that I have a problem with and I feel that it is too soft. That could be just me though. I always use headphones wherever possible. The external connector is similar to that of the iPhone and a number of different accessories can be plugged in. You can also purchase an iPad to VGA connector at the Apple Store.

Display

The iPad display is really great. It has a resolution of 1024×748 and everything looks really great on it. In direct sunlight you will get a lot of reflections but this is nothing that should put you off. There are a lot of people who complain about the thick bezel but in my opinion this isn’t that bad because you will probably have your thumb and finger on the iPad and if the bezel were thinner your finger would be touching the user interface.

User Interface

If you are familiar with the iPhone or iPod touch then you have nothing new to learn. It looks the same but there are some new additions. It is a great touch interface and very easy to use.

Media

When it comes to media the iPad is very good and features books, news, video and music. When it comes to book there are iBooks and the interface is really good. It is simple to use and it has a search feature. One of the things I loved about iBooks is the fact that you get a free sample of the book so you can decide whether or not to buy it. Kindle for iPad is also available and the great thing about this app is that once you own a book you can re-download it on as many devices as you like. Comics are another thing that are available as are magazines for the iPad. There are some great news apps available for the iPad too and these include USA Today, Wall Street Journal, BBC and Bloomberg and these are great for anyone who likes to follow the news on the go. When it comes to video you get Netflix and YouTube. Netflix works great it’s really enjoyable watching movies on the iPad. YouTube is great and they look really sharp too. As for music, the user interface is a little different from that of the iPhone but the music playback is still great.

Productivity

When it come to productivity the iPad gives you a virtual keyboard, email, calendar, file management and iWorks. The virtual keyboard is much better than that of a smartphone but not as fast as a netbook. The iPad is great for emails and small documents though. The email feature on the iPad is great and the user interface for the mail application is tailored to the small display which makes it even better. Emails are really easy to read and you can switch from one account to another with ease. The calendar works better because of the bigger display. When it comes to file management you can’t really manage files outside of iTunes so this is a bit of a pain. This is another reason to jailbreak/unlock your iPad. The apps are really sandboxed and access to their files is very limited. If you were to email a PDF to yourself you could open it but you can’t save it. Microsoft have officially announced that they won’t be making a version of Microsoft Office for the iPad so you get Apple’s iWorks which is fine.

Gaming

Gaming on the iPad is great but the controls are a little tactile. Everyone will have their own opinion on gaming so you will have to try it to see what you think.

Web Browsing

With the iPad you get more or less the same experience as you get with the iPhone on a little quicker and the display is more comfortable. You don’t have to zoom as much. Page loading is still much slower than that of a computer and there is no flash so some sites won’t work properly. Google docs won’t let you edit documents and there are some problems with some of the Facebook widgets.

Social Media

There are plenty of apps available for social media especially Twitter. Tweetdeck is great and it has a very clear interface. You can use Facebook directly. For AIM the screen can be a little bit small if you have the virtual keyboard turned on so you should switch to portrait view. There are great apps for social media and the best thing about using apps is that they let you know when anything happens.

Battery Life

The battery life of the iPad is great and you can expect 10 hours plus for normal use. You can stream videos via Netflix for 10 hours plus and book reading will get your up to twelve hours. If you are playing music with the display off you will get more than this too. In sleep mode the iPad only loses about 1% over 7 hours which is great especially when compare with all the devices. Battery replacement is expensive at $105.95 and it is not user replaceable.

What Could Be Better About The iPad

The iPad is essentially great but it is not perfect. It doesn’t have a camera, it doesn’t have USB ports and there is no multi tasking for third party applications. Hopefully these items will be addressed in the iPhone OS 4.0 that is due to be released this year. Other faults are no flash and a closed application market. Of course if you jailbreak your iPad this won’t be a problem.

—————————————————————————–

Conclusion

In conclusion I have to say that the iPad is a great device. It is great for web browsing and email, reading the news and e-books, watching movies, maps, and much more. While it may not be a replacement for a laptop or netbook it still has some amazing features. There is so much that you can do with the iPad and to really get the most out of this device I would highly recommend that you jailbreak and unlock it. This will allow you to use third party apps and do a lot of the things that Apple won’t allow. You will also be able to use any SIM card you want worldwide. Do I recommend that you spend $499 plus on this latest Apple device, yes if you like the latest gadgets and you like instant access to everything whilst on the go this is the thing for you.
